Dear Families,

Welcome to our Double Lunch Day Initiative. St. Gabriel is hoping to help those less fortunate in our community. We are joining together to help The Ottawa Mission by providing lunches for their back-to-work and back-to-school programs. We have designated Wednesday, Nov. 22nd and Wednesday, May 2nd to bring in a second lunch. These lunches not only help many valuable members of our society, but they also lessen the load of The Ottawa Mission.

How can you participate?

The first Double Lunch Day for St. Gabriel School will be on Wednesday, November 22. On this day, we ask that you send your child to school with an additional lunch. The lunches can have perishable and nonperishable items. We ask that they are healthy lunches and that they be packed in a bag that will travel to The Ottawa Mission (brown bag, Ziploc bag, etc.). Please do not include mayonnaise on the sandwiches. Feel free to include a thoughtful, spiritual message and/or a hand drawn picture that will be collected separately and sent in a separate special container. The lunches will be transported to The Ottawa Mission shortly after being collected in the morning. Upon their arrival at The Mission, the lunches will be distributed to the various programs in need. Please see their website for further information http://www.ottawamission.com/

The Mission is also in need of a few additional items:

-winter clothing suitable for adult males (gloves, hats, etc)

We will be sending a number of socks that the Gr. 3 classes collected as part of their Socktober social justice enterprise (approximately 350 pairs of socks)!

Your support in this initiative is truly appreciated by the patrons of The Ottawa Mission. The staff also send their thanks. If you have any questions about the Double Lunch Days please feel free to contact us at the school.

Sincerely,

The St. Gabriel Double Lunch Day Committee

Remembrance Day at St. Gabriel

Yesterday our class had the pleasure of welcoming Lieutenant-Colonel Dandurand to our class. He spoke about his experience serving in the Canadian Forces, and taught us that there are many different jobs a soldier can have. We are grateful for the time he took to speak with the class and  to answer the many questions we had.

Today, as a school community we took a moment to pause and reflect on the sacrifice made by the brave men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces. Thank you to all who attended.

I hope that you take the time tomorrow to Remember in your own way.
Lest we Forget.

Play for change, Halloween, and clothing drives OH MY!

Play for Change
The Grade 6's are once again hosting Play for Change  Cardboard Arcade Game Day this year. The games will exhibit our students' knowledge of Electricity. The event will take place on Monday October 30th in the gym.

We ask that students bring in any extra change  for entry into the event. This year, all money collected will go towards one of the Grade 6 initiative-Free the Children.

Halloween!
St. gabriel's is having a spirit day on October 31st. Wear your best orange and black.
Please save the creative costumes for the school dance on Friday October 27!

Clothing Drive
Clean out your children's closets and help a worthy cause.

Starting today, Monday, Oct 23, 2017 St Gabriel will be collecting clean, gently used clothes for school age children. The clothing drive will take place over the entire week ending on Friday, October 27. The donations can be dropped off into the boxes and bins located at the entrance to the school.

It is a perfect opportunity to clean out your kid's closets and at the same time to provide a wonderful gift of warmth and comfort to your children's less fortunate peers at our sister school.

We appreciate your generosity and support.

BYOD

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Ottawa Catholic School Board was one of the first school boards in Ontario to allow students to BYOD - Bring Your Own digital Device - to school. Over the last ten years, we have made significant investments to ensure our students and staff have access to a variety current technologies. The use of technology to support learning remains a key priority to ensure that students are equipped with the skills to flourish in an increasingly digital world. Chromebooks have proven to be versatile, reliable, and affordable digital tool in the classroom.

As students have engaged more with the technology that is available in their classrooms, many families have expressed interest in purchasing a device for their child to use at school and at home.  Many parents have reached out, seeking advice about which technology would best support their child’s learning, is reasonably priced, yet durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of daily use as it’s transported back and forth to school each day.

We have been working with STAPLES CANADA to provide three good Chromebook options that families can choose to purchase at a STAPLES store or online. These three models are the same devices that are currently used in schools. Each is a rugged commercial-grade Chromebook, with a full keyboard and touchscreen, (and some that fold over to also act as a tablet with a pen).  Each of these devices will support your child’s school work, including the use of their @ocsbstudent.ca Google account and all related educational applications they are already use at school.

Detailed information about the recommended options are available online at the following site: https://www.staples.ca/sbdca/en_CA/cre/programs/byod/ottawa/
OR visit your local/Ottawa STAPLES store to view these three Board-recommended devices:
  1. Lenovo N23 Yoga Chromebook
  2. Acer R13 CB5-312T-KOYQ Chromebook
  3. Acer Spin 11 R751TN-C5P3 Chromebook

Please note that there is NO expectation that students must purchase and bring their own devices to school, nor is there any incentive to the Board beyond sharing this information. Devices will continue to be made available in schools for use by all students.

Sincerely,

Shelley Montgomery
